A Generational Management Mismatch in 2010? Throughout 2009, Careerstone conducted onboarding and early career professional development programs for recent college graduates at GSA, USDA and The Washington Post, to name a few. What stood out, as we trained hundreds of these young folk, was what they consistently said they wanted from their supervisors:

• A coaching/mentoring mindset
• A relaxed relationship of open communication, more like a friendship
• Lots of positive feedback

Here’s the challenge: Most supervisors (particularly Gen X) tell us:

• They are not sure how to blend coaching into their management style
• Supervising Gen Y can be time intensive and frustrating
• They resent Gen Y’s need for, as they see it: “handholding”

For many years organizations neglected training for supervisors, but it’s obvious to us that having good management skills and practices is essential for developing and retaining young talent.

We encourage you to think about what your organization is doing to prepare its supervisors to meet the expectations of Gen Y. If the answer is “nothing” you may be heading for a Generational Management Mismatch in 2010!
